Action in the spiritual sphere involves a constant effort:

“I don’t care about any material or worldly bondage; I will keep moving towards success, crushing the pebbles of obstacles and hindrances beneath my feet.

I won’t admit any mental confusion; I will move like a meteor towards supreme fulfilment, crushing and rending asunder all negative thoughts in me.

If an obstacle becomes as high as the mighty Himalayas, I will laughingly shatter that also; and the small hillocks I will stride easily across.

And in the spiritual sphere, I will jump over the philosophical defects in the form of dogmas that are scattered here and there like holes in the ground, and become one with the Supreme Divinity.”

When the unit consciousness merges itself fully and is finally identified with the Supreme Consciousness, that is called yoga.

Here, the microcosmic drop merges into the vast ocean of Consciousness. What is the supreme goal in the life of a spiritual aspirant? To merge the individual existence into Parama Purusa, Paramatman, the ocean of Macrocosmic Consciousness. This is the real yoga.

One who wants to attain the goal must not be too concerned with obstacles on the way. If one thinks of the obstacles, they will themselves become the goal and not the Supreme.

That is why, in the field of spiritual sa’dhana’ (spiritual practice), one must always think of the Supreme, not anything else. While thinking of this goal, if some opposite feeling comes in the mind of the aspirant, s/he should not think of this.

“From where are the obstacles coming?” This should not be the topic of discussion. “What we have to reach” – this should be the topic of discussion.

In simple terms, what we have to do is to return home from where we came. We have all come from the Supreme Entity, the Nucleus of the universe. We have to return to the same destination.

The child has played throughout the day away in the fields, and now that evening has come, he returns home. He thinks that his father must have returned home: “Let me return home and sit near him.”

When one is tired of this world and worldliness, one yearns to go back to spirituality – one’s home. And what is our permanent abode, our home? The Supreme Consciousness.

Spiritual practice (sa’dhana’), therefore, is the process of returning home. It is a simple task. It requires no scholarship, no knowledge, no intellectual faculty, no long and tedious lecturing.
